Board Certified Attorneys

Attorneys who have been certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization have been designated as having a "special competence" in relation to a particular area of the law. Only lawyers who are board certified are permitted by the Texas State Bar to call themselves specialists in their practice areas. There are almost 75,000 attorneys licensed to practice in Texas. Of that number only 0.89 percent are board certified in Family Law. Every lawyer in the firm is board certified in their chosen field of expertise.

To become board certified in an area of law, an attorney must:

  • Be evaluated by fellow lawyers and judge
  • Devote a required percentage of practice to a specialty area for at least three years
  • Handle a minimum number of trials and appeals
  • Attend continuing education seminars regularly to keep legal training up to date
  • Practice law for at least five years
  • Be in good standing with the Texas State Bar
  • Pass a six-hour written examination.

To maintain board certification, a lawyer must be recertified every five years and meet requirements for continuing legal education and peer review. Bain, Files, Jarrett, Bain & Harrison, P.C. is the only firm throughout East Texas that has three board certified family law lawyers.
